Assammik Nerfallallugu is the classic hand roll. Translated the Greenlandic name means “using your hand, at the masik”. Masik describes the deck beam across your thighs present in traditional Greenland kayaks. This name emphasizes an important point, which is to start tucked low against the foredeck. This will allow the kayak to rotate freely. It also positions your body forward which allows it a greater distance to sweep aft providing you the largest opportunity to right the kayak. With practice this roll can be achieved from the stationary position hanging upside down. To begin with the momentum of the roll in can be very helpful to allow you to finish in one smooth rotation.
