Roll of the day – Under the Paddle Roll

Under the Paddle Roll I was first introduced to the Under the Paddle roll by Helen Wilson. She uses this roll as the way to teach forward finishing rolls. It has the advantage of easily being able to use a paddle float on the far right end. You can gain incredible power from this roll by pulling down with both hands and using the kayaks hull as a pivot point. However you really should practice this roll until you are barely using the paddle. Instead you should be rotating the kayak with your knee and hips. This will come with time and practice. This roll is sometimes called the continuous roll as you can just keep going and going repeating the same roll over and over again. This can be a very fast sequence of rolls as there is no need to move the paddle throughout the process.
